Thriller TV Show Analysis #1

The title of the thriller ‘Yellowjackets’ alludes to the content of the TV show. This is because the show is inspired by the novel Lord of The Flies. By naming the show ‘Yellowjackets’, it is a reference to the statement ‘girls require the ferocity of wasps’ as yellowjackets are a type of wasps. This implies that the show will include violence and ferociousness, just like the animals. The setting of the poster is crucial in letting the audience know that this is a thriller due to the dark, snowy forest alluding to discomfort and provides an eerie atmosphere. The poster uses a limited colour palette of yellow, different tones of blue, grey and dark green. This is conventional for a thriller-drama poster as they typically use darker, more muted colours to convey the darker themes of the show. Furthermore, the use of yellow for the name of the show and the ‘Showtime’ logo provides contrast with the background, standing out to the audience even if they are standing far away from the poster. The use of costume is important in the poster as it further sets the mood. For example, the blue and yellow varsity jacket could suggest that the show focusses on teenagers, as this is a staple item for classic American high school films/tv shows. As well as this, the headpiece, featuring antlers and netting, hiding the identity of the character, emphasises the uncomfortable atmosphere as we don’t know who this is or why they are dressed like this. The main image being a solitary, anonymous person is effective because it creates a sense of discomfort and abandonment, highlighting the show’s themes to the audience immediately. The poster includes the streaming platform ‘Showtime’ twice on the poster. This both promotes the company while informing the audience where they can watch ‘Yellowjackets’ and gain further information. Due to this, they have chosen to position it both top middle of the poster in a black font as well as bottom right in a yellow font. The choice of colour is effective as it contrasts the darker foliage on the poster, attracting our attention.
