TV Thriller History and Research

The Popularity of TV Thrillers Audiences love the thriller genre as it gives us an adrenaline rush through shocking revelations, plot twists, and the exploration of characters’ twisted thoughts. The main target audience for thrillers is 15–50-year-olds as the genre can appeal to a wide range of ages. Typically, thrillers appeal more to males due to a focus on action, however, the inclusion of romance in thrillers can make them more appealing to a female audience. Statistically, 60% of thriller/suspense media enjoyers are females over the age of 35, with 57% being males over 35. When making a thriller, the market is divided by type – crime thrillers, action thrillers, mystery thrillers, and supernatural thrillers. This allows you to have a better knowledge of audience preferences and genre-specific narrative strategies to make your thriller successful. The History of TV Thrillers Despite roots of the genre being traced back hundreds of years, thrillers began to develop as a distin...

Thriller TV Show Analysis #3

Image
The main image of the poster is a female character, presumably 16-20 laying in a lake. Her reflection is of a different character, and she is surrounded by forests that we can see behind her. The sky is dark and cloudy. This main image is important as it is the audience’s first impression of the show, meaning the designers must promote the atmosphere and characters to the audience.  The title of the thriller is important in hinting to the audience what will occur in the show. For this TV show, the 4 title ‘Cruel Summer’ makes it clear that the season/weather will be summer and that something or multiple things go wrong for characters throughout their summer. Furthermore, the placement of the title is effective as it's below the characters’ faces, at the middle bottom of the poster. The design is also interesting as the word 'summer’ blends into the water.  The setting of the poster is important as we can see a forest and a lake. This desolate location suggests that the ...

Thriller TV Show Analysis #2

The main image of the poster depicts an older man and a younger girl looking back at the camera, surrounded by demolished buildings. The sky is dark, with clouds dominating the top of the poster, while small glimpses of sunlight are visible at the centre. As this is the audience’s first impression of the show, this suggests that it will include themes of destruction, human connection, and possibly a dystopian or futuristic world.  The title of the thriller ‘The Last Of Us’ alludes to the content of the show. This is because it implies that the two characters pictured are some of the last surviving of the population, further uncovering what will occur in the show: a fight for survival.   Furthermore, the placement and colour of the title is important in gaining the audience’s attention as it is in a bold, clear font in the colour white and in the centre of the poster.  The use of costume is effective as both characters are wearing jackets and carrying bags. This fur...

Thriller TV Show Analysis #1

Image
The title of the thriller ‘Yellowjackets’ alludes to the content of the TV show. This is because the show is inspired by the novel Lord of The Flies. By naming the show ‘Yellowjackets’, it is a reference to the statement ‘girls require the ferocity of wasps’ as yellowjackets are a type of wasps. This implies that the show will include violence and ferociousness, just like the animals.  The setting of the poster is crucial in letting the audience know that this is a thriller due to the dark, snowy forest alluding to discomfort and provides an eerie atmosphere.   The poster uses a limited colour palette of yellow, different tones of blue, grey and dark green. This is conventional for a thriller-drama poster as they typically use darker, more muted colours to convey the darker themes of the show. Furthermore, the use of yellow for the name of the show and the ‘Showtime’ logo provides contrast with the background, standing out to the audience even if they are standing far away fro...

'The Sanctuary' Synopsis

My Thriller TV Show When planning my TV Thriller, I decided to take inspiration from the aesthetics and atmosphere of Yellowjackets (2021), Midnight Mass (2021), The Witch (2015), and the story behind Ethel Cain’s album Preachers Daughter (2022). Synopsis In the remote moors of northern England, the small village of Hollowchurch is a place time forgot. Its dwindling, aging population clings to traditions rooted in faith, fear, and folklore. But when a young journalist, Heather Hayes visits the village to investigate a cryptic story about a fire at a long-abandoned church decades ago, she is drawn into the unsettling grip of its tight knit community. At the centre of the village is The Sanctuary, a religious order led by the deeply unsettling Father Elias Crowe. The Sanctuary preaches redemption and rebirth, but whispers of miracles, strange rituals, and unexplained disappearances linger in the shadows. Heather’s probing questions unearth buried traumas as it becomes clear that t...

Statement of Intent

When designing my bus stop posters, I will make sure that it aligns with the rules made by the ASA. For example, my posters will not contain anything that is unsuitable for younger viewers (such as violence or distressing images), and they will not cause offence to specific social groups. It’s important for me to comply with these rules as my posters will be used for bus stops, meaning they will be viewed by all ages at all times. In TV broadcasting, the watershed begins at 9pm to protect children from unsuitable material such as violence, strong language, and graphic imagery. Due to this, my TV Thriller will be broadcasted after 9pm as it is likely to include elements of violence, darker themes, and occasional strong language. For my show to successfully appeal to my target audience of 16–25-year-olds, I will ensure to portray the younger characters in a positive way. For example, in the show my protagonist is aged 18-20 and will be a morally correct character who seeks the truth wi...
