Thriller TV Show Analysis #2

The main image of the poster depicts an older man and a younger girl looking back at the camera, surrounded by demolished buildings. The sky is dark, with clouds dominating the top of the poster, while small glimpses of sunlight are visible at the centre. As this is the audience’s first impression of the show, this suggests that it will include themes of destruction, human connection, and possibly a dystopian or futuristic world. The title of the thriller ‘The Last Of Us’ alludes to the content of the show. This is because it implies that the two characters pictured are some of the last surviving of the population, further uncovering what will occur in the show: a fight for survival.  Furthermore, the placement and colour of the title is important in gaining the audience’s attention as it is in a bold, clear font in the colour white and in the centre of the poster. The use of costume is effective as both characters are wearing jackets and carrying bags. This further emphasises that they are on an adventure as they are walking towards the destruction, telling the audience what will occur in the thriller TV show. The poster uses a limited colour palette of muted greens, browns, and different tones of grey. This sets the mood of the show, alluding to the audience that it is a darker thriller show rather than a light-hearted comedy or action. Furthermore, the darker tones are primarily around the edges of the poster, acting as a frame to pull our attention towards the centre, where the main characters and title are. The lighting used in the poster is low key lighting. Not only does this set the atmosphere to be dismal, but also brings attention to the characters as shadows are cast on their clothes, causing their faces to stand out. This could be an attempt to highlight the stars of the cast, Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal. The primary target audience for this show is existing fans/players of the video game, mostly aged 16-30. They can attract these through the clear title, which is in the same font as the game, and the quickly recognisable settings and characters. The secondary target audience is adults aged 25-44 who haven’t played the game, or aware of the game. They can target them through the feature of an older character and the dystopian setting.
